Students are also welcome to participate in conferences in other ways, such as:
- Attending sessions
- Volunteering to work at the conference
- Volunteering to review proposals
- Volunteering to serve as an officer in an Interest Section
- Contributing articles to an IS newsletter
- Participating in a swap shop
- Presenting a poster
- Presenting a research report
- Organizing a panel
- Presenting a paper or demonstration
- Delivering a workshop
How to increase your chances of getting your conference proposal accepted:
- Pitch your proposal to the conference theme
- Check out topics from the previous year鈥檚 conference (often available online)
- Put yourself in the place of the session attendees (what kind of session would YOU attend)
- Partner with a colleague (collaboration is smiled upon by conference organizers)
- Follow instructions carefully (guidelines are online)
- Ask someone whose proposal was accepted previously to share a copy with you
- Don鈥檛 miss the submission deadline
- Proofread (or have someone else proofread) your proposal
Did you know鈥
- Airfare will be the least of your expenses. Hotel rooms cost about $100/day, but you can get 3-4 people to a room if you make certain accommodations.
- 欧美三级片 offers travel grants for graduate students. TESOL and other national conferences usually have travel awards for students as well.
- The student conference registration fee is almost always much less than the regular registration fee.
- Most conferences have 鈥渆arly bird specials.鈥 If you register early, you will get a discount on the fee.
- You can often pick up free texts and other materials on the very last day of the conference. Publishers don鈥檛 like to pack up and ship all their materials back to the home office.
