The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Teacher Education prepares students to become scholars and practitioners in the field of teacher education. The concentration's curriculum engages students in course work, research, and professional experience in school and community settings. Upon graduation, students will have the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the scholarships of teaching, service and research.

The PhD concentration in teacher education features opportunities to:

  • Participate in engaged scholarship through collaborative work focused on current educational problems with partner schools and community centers.
  • Develop integrated and interdisciplinary perspectives on teacher education practice with a commitment to diversity and exploring global perspectives.
  • Explore issues of equity both locally and globally.
  • Work both independently and in collaboration with faculty to pursue rigorous research agendas, publish in scholarly journals and present widely at state, national and international conferences.
  • Engage in learning experiences that ensure the candidate possesses an innovative response to key issues in teacher education and their area of emphasis (e.g., subject area or level).
  • Participate in teacher education programs as teaching assistants.
  • Engage in scholarship of teaching and learning.

Some of the research and outreach projects that our faculty and students are currently engaged in include:

  • The development and implementation of (funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Issues of diversity in science teacher education
  • Developing equity-literate teacher leaders to support school renewal
  • Coordinating clinically rich teacher education programs
  • The development of clinical pedagogy in school and university based teacher educators
  • Preparing preservice teachers to engage in mathematics-specific consultations with special education professionals to meet the math learning needs of students with exceptionalities
  • Preparing teachers to use research to inform their teaching
  • Preparing elementary teachers to plan and implement integrated STEM lessons
  • Using video-based reflections and multimedia portfolios to develop effective practices
  • Teacher response to students in whole-class discussions and to students’ writing
  • Teacher learning for teachers of students with significant disabilities
  • Teaching with Culturally Specific Primary Sources in Puerto Rico and Florida to Build Social Capital among Preservice Teachers
  • Building Blocks: Turtles, Bots, Dashes and Dots
