Workshop Explores Conservation Laws in High School Physics
The David C. Anchin Center for the Advancement of Teaching recently hosted a workshop tailored for new secondary physics educators. Titled "Conservation Laws in the High School Physics Classroom," the event aimed to equip teachers with innovative teaching strategies to effectively engage students in understanding the fundamental principles of energy, momentum, rotation, fluids, and electric circuits through the lens of conservation laws.
Held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the workshop provided a morning of immersive learning and collaboration. Attendees had the opportunity to delve into various aspects of conservation laws in physics, gaining insights into teaching methodologies designed to foster meaningful comprehension among students.
Leading the workshop was Oather Strawderman, a distinguished educator with over two decades of experience teaching physics at Lawrence Free State High School in Lawrence, Kansas. As the Science Department Chair, Strawderman's expertise spans across all levels of physics education, from Principles of Technology to Conceptual Physics to AP Physics. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, having been deeply involved in the AP Physics program as a leader at the AP Physics Reading and contributing as an item writer and reviewer for all four AP Physics exams. Recently appointed as the Chair of the College Board Science Academic Advisory Committee, Strawderman continues to shape the landscape of physics education at a national level.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in interactive sessions aimed at honing their skills in guiding students to identify common misconceptions surrounding conservation laws. They also explored innovative laboratory ideas and materials tailored to conservation law topics, fostering a dynamic learning environment within their classrooms. Additionally, the workshop provided a platform for networking and collaboration among peers, facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices in physics education.
By empowering educators with the necessary tools and insights, the workshop aimed to enhance the quality of physics education in secondary schools, ensuring that students are equipped with a solid understanding of conservation laws鈥攁n essential foundation for future scientific endeavors.
