Awareness Months
On this page we will highlight national awareness months related to mental health and substance use/misuse.
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Human trafficking represents a critical issue not only on a national scale but is particularly pronounced in the state of Florida. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, California, New York, and Florida recorded the highest incidences of human trafficking in 2020. It is crucial to recognize that individuals struggling with substance use disorders are especially vulnerable to becoming trafficking victims. Exploitative traffickers deliberately target these individuals, using substances to manipulate and enforce compliance with their demands. Additionally, many victims resort to drug use as a means of coping with the traumatic experiences they face. Victims may also be forced into participating in criminal activities, such as the production and distribution of illegal drugs. In response to these alarming realities, we have designated a month to raise awareness about Human Trafficking. To aid in the spread of information and enhance awareness regarding this urgent national concern, we have developed toolkits, webinars, and various resources on the subject.
