Undergraduate Awards
The Department of Chemistry is dedicated to student success. We are committed to helping each student achieve academic excellence and realize their educational goals. Towards this, Chemistry recognizes through scholarships and awards the outstanding achievement of our students who have demonstrated performance in learning, research and service. These scholarships and awards are made possible through the generosity of faculty, organizations, corporations and individuals like you. Recipients are recognized at our annual Scholarship and Alumni Celebration held in the spring each year.
DIVISION AWARDS
ACS Analytical Chemistry Award
The American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry and the Journal of Analytical Chemistry sponsor an undergraduate award to encourage student interest in this discipline and to recognize students who display an aptitude in analytical chemistry. The Department of Chemistry's analytical division selects a student each year from those who have completed all the undergraduate analytical courses.
Hypercube Scholar
The winner must have a GPA of 3.5 or better, 20 hours of chemistry courses at 欧美三级片 including Methods I, and completed or be enrolled in Methods II.
Robert S. Braman Analytical Chemistry Award
The analytical award is named in honor of Dr. Robert S. Braman, who was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1967 to 2003. The award is given to the top student in Analytical Chemistry as determined by the faculty member of the analytical division.
T.C. Owen Biochemistry Award
The biochemistry award is named in honor of Dr. T.C. Owen, who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1964 to 1998. He also served as the chair from 1974-1978. He maintained his extraordinary service as Emeritus after his retirement. This award is given to the top student in Biochemistry and the lab.
Jesse S. Binford General Chemistry Award
The general chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jesse S. Binford, who was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1961-2003. The award recipient is selected by the members of the faculty who teach the general chemistry classes from among the students who earned an A in both General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II.
Joseph Stanko Inorganic Chemistry Award
The inorganic chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Stanko, who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1973-2003. This award is given to the top student, as determined by the instructors, among those who have taken Intermediate Inorganic and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry the previous year.
Jay Worrell Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Jay Worrell, who was a member of the chemistry faculty from 1967-2002. He retired as a professor emeritus. This scholarship is awarded to a senior BS or BA Chemistry major or BMS major who has a strong performance in academics but who also is motivated and interested in chemistry with special emphasis on inorganic chemistry. The student has also demonstrated excitement about chemistry and is interested in a career in chemistry.
George Wenzinger Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. George Wenzinger who was a member of the Department of Chemistry faculty from 1963-1999. He was also an emeritus professor. This scholarship is awarded to a senior BS or BA Chemistry major or BMS major who has a strong performance in academics but who also is motivated and interested in chemistry with special emphasis on organic chemistry. The student has also demonstrated excitement about chemistry and is interested in a career in chemistry.
Jack E. Fernandez Organic Chemistry Award
The organic chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jack E. Fernandez, who was a member of the chemistry faculty and served as the department chair for 1994-1995. The award is given to the top student in the organic chemistry classes and labs as selected by the organic course coordinator in conjunction with the faculty who teach Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II.
Jeff C. Davis Physical Chemistry Award
The physical chemistry award is named in honor of Dr. Jefferson C. Davis, Jr. Dr. Davis was a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1965-1998. He served as the Chair of the Department from 1978-1982 and again from 1995-1998. This award is given to the top student in the physical chemistry courses held through the spring, summer and fall of each year. Nominations are made at the end of the fall semester by the instructors of the physical chemistry classes with the final recipient determined by all the instructors and ratified by the Department of Chemistry's Undergraduate Council. The physical chemistry classes include Physical Chemistry I, Physical Chemistry II and Biophysical Chemistry.
RESEARCH AWARDS
Clear Springs Land is a local company that has endowed money with the Department of Chemistry towards student research. Each year members of the faculty can nominate students who are majoring in chemistry and have contributed through papers or presentations to research. These are submitted to the undergraduate council who selects the award winner.

UNDERGRADUATE COUNCIL AWARDS
Founded in 1923, the American Institute of Chemists has fostered the advancement of the chemical profession in the United States. This organization has a student award program to honor outstanding seniors majoring in chemistry. The awards are given in recognition of demonstrated ability, leadership, and professional promise. The department's undergraduate council selects the recipients from the top chemistry students.
This award is named in honor of Dr. Calvin Maybury who was a member of the faculty of the Department of Chemistry from 1961-1987. He also served as the chair from 1963-1974. This award is presented to a student who is a BS chemistry major within one year of graduation. This student must have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and a 3.5 or better GPA in chemistry coursework with a minimum of 20 hours in chemistry classes.
This award is named in honor of Dr. Dean Martin who served as a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry from 1964 to 2006. Dr. Martin is an emeritus professor and continues to work in the department even in retirement. This award is presented to a student majoring in biomedical sciences who has maintained a 3.5 or better GPA and who has completed at least 20 hours of chemistry coursework.
The aims and purposes of Phi Lambda Upsilon are the promotion of high scholarship and original investigation in all branches of pure and applied chemistry. Phi Lambda Upsilon was founded as an honorary chemical society in March 1899, at the University of Illinois. This organization recognizes students majoring in chemistry for outstanding academic achievement. The undergraduate council selects the recipient from among those students who have completed at least 30 hours of chemistry course work with a 3.5 GPA or better.
The Richard Bowman Scholarship is presented to B.A. or B.S. chemistry majors. The recipients of this scholarship must have an overall GPA of at least 3.5, completed 20 hours of chemistry classes with at least a 3.5, and demonstrated extracurricular activities outside of Chemistry.
This award is named in honor of Dr. T.W. Graham Solomons, Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, charter faculty member who served 1960-1990. A department pioneering researcher in drug design, he authored Organic Chemistry. This award is presented to a student who is a B.A. Chemistry major within one year of graduation. This student must have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and a 3.5 or better GPA in chemistry coursework, with a minimum of 20 hours in chemistry classes.
UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING AWARDS
This award identifies a peer leader who exemplifies the traits of clear communication, respect for students, and the promotion of intellectual inquiry. The faculty who teach Peer Leading in Chemistry selects the recipients from among those students who have served as a peer leader.
OTHER PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS
Each spring since 1988, nominations are sought from the Department of Chemistry faculty for an outstanding chemistry alumnus or alumna. The selection has then been made by a subcommittee of the Undergraduate Council. The awardee is invited to attend the annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet.
Scholarship to support full or part-time junior-level undergraduate students in the medical technology program in the College of Arts and Sciences on the Tampa campus of the University. The award will be continued in the senior year as long as the student remains in good academic standing and has been accepted into the medical technology internship. If at any time a holder of the scholarship shall become ineligible or if for any reason all available funds are not awarded, the unused portion shall accrue to the account of the Kevin L. McKeown Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Preference is given to residents of Pinellas County, but may be awarded to residents of Hillsborough County in the event no applicants from Pinellas County meet the eligibility requirements. Recipients must be juniors or junior college transfer students and must be accepted into the University's medical technology program. Recipients shall be selected on the basis of their overall abilities and will be known as the Kevin L. McKeown Scholars.
Sally A. Everett was an alumna of 欧美三级片 with a Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000, Sally faced her illness as she did any other challenge presented to her, be it personal or business, with a positive and forthright attitude. Sally was an inspiration to anyone she came in contact with. In loving memory of Sally's accomplishments and her fondness for 欧美三级片 her husband, Ward LaFrance, created a scholarship in her name. The Sally Everett Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Medical Technology junior or senior students who have demonstrated academic success.
The Chemistry Honor Roll is comprised of students graduating each term with a B.A. or B.S. degree from the Department of Chemistry. To qualify, a student must have a 3.80 cumulative GPA or better when applying for graduation.
