Sunlight interacts with the atmosphere, the water, particles, and dissolved matter in the water before it is captured by a satellite. In remote sensing of ocean color, the atmosphere’s contributions are corrected for, resulting in spectral surface reflectance that can be used to characterize microalgae and macroalgae both below and on the surface. Large masses of algae in the great Atlantic Sargassum belt and around the world affect local ecosystems and the environment. Satellite imagery, combined with traditional research techniques, is now helping scientists to study them.
