Dr. Iraida V. Carrion, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and is an affiliated faculty in the department of Anthropology. Dr. Carrion research intersects end of life care, cancer and health decisions among the Latinos in the USA and indigenous communities in Northeast India. She also conducts comparative research among older adults in Barcelona, Spain and Latinos in Central Florida.
Dr. Carrion has extensive clinical practice experience in psychiatric, school and medical settings in New York City, West Texas and in the Central Florida area. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Florida. Her career as a clinician includes serving children, adolescents, older adults and families coping with mental health disorders, terminal illnesses and grief and loss. Dr. Carrion has also functioned as a clinical supervisor and program director in community-based agencies and schools as well as in hospice organizations. She has also assumed leadership roles as Chair of the MSW program, Chair of the BSW program and in Field Education at 欧美三级片. Dr. Carrion is currently the MSW Program Director for the 欧美三级片 Sarasota-Manatee Cohort.
Several noteworthy published studies conducted by Dr. Carrion among Latinos with cancer and at end of life have identified the need for communication pertaining to advance care planning within disciplines in health care settings and highlight the necessity for culturally competent communication regarding treatment options. Comparative studies regarding the utilization, knowledge of hospice services andbeliefs about pain management underscore health disparities in end of life care. Dr. Carrion is currently a co-leader of a collaborative team which includes faculty from the School of Social Work, College of Pharmacy and an organization in Northeast India (RIWATCH). Utilizing a community participatory model they have conducted research projects related to end of life practices and maternal health in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India and have ongoing collaborative research projects involving indigenous community members.
Dr. Carrion teaches at the BSW, MSW, and Ph.D levels in the School of Social Work. She received the National Association of Social Work (NASW) Tampa, Florida Chapter and the NASW Florida State Chapter, Social Work Educator of the Year Awards. She also received the 欧美三级片 Diversity Award, 欧美三级片 Hispanic Pathway Award, the Status of Latino Faculty Award and the McKnight Junior Faculty Development Fellowship.
In addition to teaching and research she is a member of the Council on Social Work Education, American Anthropological Association, International Psycho-Oncology National Association of Social Workers and the Society for Social Work Research and The Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Carrion is recognized as a Social Work leader and was appointed to serve on two national committees of the NASW. As a result, Dr. Carrion contributed to the development of the NASW Cultural Competence Indicators and NASW Standards for Social Work Practice in Palliative and End of Life Care. She is currently on the editorial board of Health and Social Work, American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Journal of Research on Aging.
