Dr. Surrency is a Professor of Instruction in ASL Interpreting and cultural and linguistic issues in CSD. He currently serves as Associate Chair of department and Director of the ASL Interpreting program. He is active in the Clear Communication Group Laboratory. Aside from these roles, he is a linguist interested in the interaction between language, culture, and interpretation. His areas of specialization include hermeneutics, linguistic stigmatization, cultural problems in interpretation, and ethical dilemmas for both spoken and sign-language interpretation. He is particularly interested in international issues in interpretation. In addition to his work at the University of South Florida, he is an accredited International-Sign interpreter by the World Federation of the Deaf and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters, working in many high-level international venues. Outside of his work in the university, he enjoys time with his extended, non-traditional family, traveling Europe, and cooking.
