Rapid changes in technology are a driving force in society. One could argue that the
effects are most obvious in the realm of communication. I am determined to harness
technology growth within the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) to
benefit individuals with communication problems. In particular, too many technological
applications applied to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) are guided
by myths and misinformation rather than empirical study. I am committed to improving
AAC interventions and advocating for their effective implementation, specifically
for bilingual individuals and those with severe communication needs. Having started
my undergraduate degree pursuing computer engineering, my switch to communication
sciences and disorders has equipped me with valuable tools and prepared me as a researcher
in the field. Courses in AAC and assistive technology, language development, and statistical
methods provided me with a strong foundation for conducting research and analyzing
data. These skills will serve as the backbone of my studies, enabling me to contribute
meaningfully to the advancement of AAC interventions.
