Colby Lynne Valentine, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Criminology. Dr. Valentine received her B.A. in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice from the University of Pacific (2005), her M.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from San Diego State University (2007) and her Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Florida State University (2012). Her research focuses on correctional-based research (i.e., prison misconduct, jail visitation, solitary confinement), victimization (i.e., sex and labor trafficking, intimate partner violence) and criminology and criminal justice pedagogy.

Dr. Valentine also has experience working with various criminal justice agencies. While living in California, she worked with the San Joaquin County District Attorney鈥檚 Office, Victim-Witness Program as well as San Diego鈥檚 Alternative to Detention Program, CHOICE. Additionally, while completing her doctorate, she worked in the Bureau of Grants and Development for the Florida Department of Corrections. Starting in 2018, she became a research evaluator for a multidisciplinary, human trafficking task force to help create and implement victim-centered, collaborative, and sustainable approaches to identifying victims of human trafficking within Suffolk County, New York.

She teaches on various topics such as research methods, criminological theory, corrections, and victimization. Dr. Valentine is passionate for student-centered learning and is the past recipient of the American Society of Criminology, Victimology Faculty Teacher of the Year (2017) as well as the 欧美三级片, College of Behavioral and Community Sciences, 2024 Outstanding Teaching Award. In addition, she actively contributes to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences where she was a founding member and Chair of the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Section. She also served as an Executive Advisory Board Member of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.
