Melissa M. Sloan (Ph.D., 2005, Vanderbilt University) is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at the University of South Florida. Her research, which has been published in journals including Social Psychology Quarterly, Work & Occupations, The British Journal of Criminology, and Crime & Delinquency, concerns inequalities in emotional experiences and expressions within organizations and the social shaping of emotion, with a particular emphasis on public fear concerning the threat of terrorism and associated policy preferences. Dr. Sloan is currently examining the emotional experiences and the roles of social identity and social networks in women鈥檚 involvement in terrorist organizations in the Middle East. She has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the American Association of University Women to fund her research.
